Baden-Württemberg: Injured police officers after riots mostly back on duty

Offenburg (dpa / lsw) - police officers who were injured in riots around the Offenburg AfD party congress are mostly back on duty. Only one officer who was sprayed with a fire extinguisher is still unfit for work, the spokeswoman for the Offenburg police said on Monday to the German Press Agency.

According to earlier police reports, 55 people were injured in violent protests against the AfD on Saturday in the Baden city - among them were 53 police officers and two demonstrators. According to the police, 17 officers were unable to work after the incidents.

According to the information, police officers suffered irritation of the eyes and respiratory tract because they were sprayed with a fire extinguisher and because masking material, clothing and pyrotechnics were on fire. Other officers suffered bruises and abrasions from being punched and kicked.

According to a report by the anti-fascist campaign that has since been published, several participants in the counter-demonstration were injured, some seriously, by being hit on the head and kicked. A number of injuries was not given in the report. According to its own statements, the anti-fascist campaign had called for the counter-demonstration.

The Mayor of Offenburg, Marco Steffens, announced that he disapproved of the violence at the demonstration. "If damage to property takes place and police officers are injured, that's clearly going too far," said the CDU politician.
