Baden-Württemberg: Inpatient hospice in Stuttgart closes

There is a shortage of skilled workers in nursing homes, hospitals and other social institutions. Now a stationary hospice in the state capital is taking the consequences shortly before Christmas.

Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) - Because there is a lack of skilled workers, the stationary hospice St. Martin in Stuttgart has been temporarily closed. The facility in the Degerloch district has eight beds, a spokeswoman for the Catholic city deanery told the German Press Agency on request. The outpatient support for adults and the other areas of the hospice, however, continue.

"Like many hospitals, nursing homes and other social institutions, the St. Martin hospice is also affected by the growing shortage of skilled workers in nursing," reported the spokeswoman. The people affected were therefore moved to other facilities in the area. The vacancies in nursing are to be filled again in order to enable a reopening. There is no date for this yet, as the spokeswoman reported.

Just last week, Caritas announced that it was temporarily closing a nursing home in the Black Forest community of Glottertal (Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district). Another reason was the lack of skilled workers. So far, 20 residents have been cared for in the facility.

According to the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Health and Social Affairs, it has no overview of closures in the area. However, it is known that there are care facilities that are restricting their range of care due to the tense staff situation, a spokesman reported on request.
