Baden-Württemberg: Investigations into the cause of the deadly explosion

All day, the emergency services are looking for a missing woman in the rubble - in the evening it is clear: a person did not survive the explosion in Stuttgart. But what led to the accident?

Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) - After the devastating explosion in a residential building in Stuttgart with one dead, work continues at the scene of the accident. The body was found under the rubble in the evening, the police said. It is believed to be a missing 85-year-old. The emergency services had been looking for her all day, and Interior Minister Thomas Strobl (CDU) had also hoped for a miracle. So far, the focus has been on the rescue measures, said a police spokeswoman for the German Press Agency.

So far, a gas explosion has been considered probable - but that is not certain, as the spokeswoman emphasized. The investigators currently have no evidence of a crime, they assume an accident.

The explosion happened around 3 a.m. early Monday morning and parts of the house collapsed. A family with two children who lived in the house was slightly injured. According to the fire department, the 56-year-old father, his 55-year-old wife, their 11-year-old son and their 13-year-old daughter were able to save themselves from the destroyed house.

Late Monday afternoon, Stuttgart's Lord Mayor Frank Nopper and Strobl got an idea on site. Strobl thanked the emergency services "from the bottom of his heart" and wished the injured a speedy and full recovery.

Specialists from the State Criminal Police Office were also involved in investigating the cause of the detonation. "Extensive security and rescue measures with the support of the THW, fire brigade and rescue service are still ongoing," said the statement from the evening. The adjacent semi-detached house was also badly damaged and is now uninhabitable.
