Baden-Württemberg: Kretschmann also warns about the number of refugees

Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) - In view of the increasing number of refugees, Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann (Greens) also sees the state and its municipalities facing major problems in accommodating the people affected. "We already have more refugees than in the refugee crisis of 2015," Kretschmann told the "Südwest Presse" (Tuesday) and warned: "The population must be prepared for the fact that we will find ourselves in difficult situations again." Like Justice and Migration Minister Marion Gentges (CDU), Kretschmann did not rule out that sports halls would have to be used as emergency accommodation again.

According to the Baden-Württemberg district council, various districts are already in the process of occupying sports halls as emergency accommodation. Gentges had also previously emphasized that cities and communities were desperately looking for apartments and places to sleep for thousands of people. "The situation is extremely serious," she had said.

Since the beginning of the war in February 2022, the number of new arrivals in Baden-Württemberg has been increasing every week. According to the Ministry of Justice, the initial reception centers operated by the state are fully occupied despite increased capacities.
