Baden-Württemberg: Kretschmann and Bayaz present budget

These are turbulent times: the Kretschmann coalition is also feeling the effects of this when it comes to the budget. The federal relief package will cost the state billions. Green-Black must hope for the tax estimate.

Stuttgart (dpa/lsw) - Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann and Finance Minister Danyal Bayaz will present the budget for 2023 and 2024 in Stuttgart on Tuesday (12.00 p.m.). Greens and CDU do not want to take on any new debt. In addition, the coalition is planning new investments of almost 1.4 billion euros, despite inflation and the energy crisis. In addition, the country wants to create a risk buffer of 1.46 billion euros.

But it is already becoming apparent that this buffer will not be enough. And that is due to the third relief package that the traffic lights in Berlin put together at the beginning of September to compensate for the rapidly increasing prices. Bayaz has calculated that the state and local authorities would have to shoulder around 4.8 billion euros in costs if the federal government got its way. This Wednesday, Kretschmann and the other state heads of government are negotiating with Chancellor Olaf Scholz in Berlin about the distribution of costs.

According to calculations by the Stuttgart Ministry of Finance, the state will face additional costs of around 3.1 billion euros at the moment, and cities and municipalities in the south-west will face another almost 1.7 billion euros. The Greens and CDU in the southwest must hope for a positive tax estimate at the end of October. Since a gas shortage in winter has been averted for the time being, the hope does not seem unfounded. The public sector also benefits from the fact that inflation also increases revenue from VAT.

Economics Minister Nicole Hoffmeister-Kraut (CDU) and Science Minister Theresia Bauer (Greens) also want to present the new funding for start-ups at the government press conference. It is Bauer's last appearance here, because her successor Petra Olschowski (Greens) will take over the official business on Wednesday. Bauer wants to become mayor of her hometown of Heidelberg.
