Baden-Württemberg: KSC draws self-confidence from cup success

After the two defeats at the beginning of the 2nd division, Karlsruher SC started the DFB Cup with an 8-0 win in Neustrelitz. Not only did the defense present themselves confidently there, the attackers also collected plus points before the crisis duel at Greuther Fürth.

Neustrelitz (dpa / lsw) - It was just a win against a top division team. But it was a very high one, and it did the somewhat sore soul of Karlsruher SC, who were still pointless in the 2nd Bundesliga, pretty good. It's also nice not to have conceded a goal again, said KSC coach Christian Eichner after the 8-0 (3-0) win in the DFB Cup at Mecklenburg's fifth division side TSG Neustrelitz. "That was not entirely unimportant for us in the overall package."

After all, the Karlsruhers had previously started the league with two defeats and a goal difference of 2:8 - and were therefore considered a candidate for a cup embarrassment on Friday. Instead, before the crisis duel on Friday (6.30 p.m. / Sky), Eichner’s team gained fresh self-confidence in the still winless Bundesliga relegated SpVgg Greuther Fürth, not only in the defensive, which was finally stable.

The attackers, who are particularly in focus after the departure of top scorer Philipp Hofmann to VfL Bochum, also put in a strong performance in Neustrelitz when they made it into the second round of the cup (18/19 October). Fabian Schleusener in particular stood out from the team with a hat trick in the 12th, 14th and 41st minutes. But new signing Simone Rapp, who came on after an hour and was out due to problems in the neck area at the beginning of the season, scored with a double goal towards the end of the game (82nd/87th). The other goals were scored by Jerome Gondorf (67'), Malik Batmaz (71') and Daniel Gordon (73').

The guests played concentrated from the start. And when TSG got into the game a little better after Schleusener's first two goals, the 30-year-old made everything clear with the 0:3 before the break. In Fürth, the KSC now wants to get its first league points - and there on Friday it meets an opponent who just made a fool of themselves with a 0: 2 in the DFB Cup at the fifth division team Stuttgarter Kickers.
