Baden-Württemberg: lynxes in the southwest are only responsible for a dozen cracks

Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) - Lynxes in Baden-Württemberg tear significantly fewer grazing and farm animals than the wolves, which are particularly controversial among shepherds and farmers. According to the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Agriculture, a total of twelve farm animals have been killed by the four lynxes that have become native to Baden-Württemberg since 2017. The amount of damage incurred is a comparatively low 2380 euros. Livestock tears would also be compensated for by a lynx fund, the ministry said in response to a request from the AfD parliamentary group in the state parliament.

"The lynx does not represent a general threat to grazing animals in Baden-Württemberg," the ministry said with conviction. The animals feed mainly on deer and need around one kilogram of meat per day when fully grown. Sheep, goats or wild animals are usually not or only very rarely part of the animals' prey scheme, the ministry said. Because they tend to jump over obstacles or climb nearby trees, herd protection with fences, as with wolves, is largely pointless.

In Baden-Württemberg, lynxes are mainly found in the region from the High Rhine to the northern Black Forest and in the Upper Danube Valley with the hillside forests of the Swabian Jura bordering to the north. According to the ministry, the animals have been coming to Baden-Württemberg from Switzerland since the 1990s. So far, however, only male lynx are considered sedentary.

In the case of wolves, on the other hand, livestock owners are very concerned about the development. Because the wolf has no natural enemies. Last year, 13 attacks by wolves were proven in Baden-Württemberg, 42 animals were killed - mainly sheep and goats, but also a cow. However, there are numerous other tears that are not clear as to whether they may have come from a dog. Conservationists, on the other hand, celebrate the settlement of sedentary wolves as a success in the fight against the extinction of animal species.
