Baden-Württemberg: Mercedes-Benz celebrates the laying of the foundation stone for E-Campus

Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) - With a competence center for battery technologies, Mercedes-Benz wants to further advance the change to electromobility. CEO Ola Källenius laid the foundation stone for the so-called E-Campus in Stuttgart on Tuesday. The center at the main plant in Untertürkheim is to be gradually put into operation in 2023. Research will be carried out there on future generations of batteries and battery cells, but these will also be developed and produced.

According to Källenius, the cornerstone symbolizes the sustainability of the location. With around 16,000 employees, the plant in Untertürkheim is the largest location in the production network for the powertrain, according to Mercedes-Benz. "Untertürkheim will continue to be the center of Mercedes-Benz drive expertise in the future," said Källenius, according to a statement.

Baden-Württemberg's Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann (Greens) said that the "heart of the electric car" will be created on the E-Campus with the battery and the electric drive train. "That makes this location a symbol for the transformation of the automotive industry - from combustion engines to electric drives."

The chairman of the general works council, Ergun Lümali, described the laying of the foundation stone as very good news for the employees and "a clear commitment to the future viability of the traditional location". The transformation towards CO2-free drives must not lead to a reduction in added value.
