Baden-Württemberg: Methane emissions in the southwest have fallen

Methane is a dangerous greenhouse gas. It also occurs in agriculture. Emissions can be reduced by using biogas plants.

Stuttgart (dpa/lsw) - Between 1990 and 2020, emissions of the greenhouse gas methane in agriculture in Baden-Württemberg fell by 25 percent. This emerges from a response from the Ministry of Agriculture published in Stuttgart to a request from the SPD parliamentary group. Methane is the second most harmful greenhouse gas after carbon dioxide (CO2). The SPD politician Gernot Gruber said that over a period of 20 years, methane is 86 times more harmful than CO2.

In addition to agriculture, methane is produced in landfills or in the oil and gas industry. According to the EU Commission, the gas is responsible for around a quarter of the man-made global warming to date.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, methane emissions can be greatly reduced through the use of liquid manure and manure in biogas plants, but cannot be completely avoided. Gruber went on to say that only 25 percent of the manure spread in the country is used for energy in biogas plants, is far too little. The federal target is 70 percent.
