Baden-Württemberg: Minister Hermann insists on improvements for public transport

Kehl (dpa / lsw) - In view of the consultations at federal level about further relief for citizens, the Baden-Württemberg Minister of Transport, Winfried Hermann, advocates solid financing of local public transport. "Good public transport is the best compensation for high fuel prices," said the Greens politician at the German Press Agency in Kehl (Ortenaukreis). After the end of the tank discount, refueling became more expensive again.

This Saturday, the coalition leaders meet with Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) for crucial consultations on relief because of the high energy prices. Federal Transport Minister Volker Wissing (FDP) wants to find a solution to replace the 9-euro ticket, even if it will be more expensive. He also wants to hold talks with the states about sharing the costs with the federal government. The 9-euro ticket expired after three months at the end of August.

Hermann had already said that the department heads of the federal states agreed that solid basic financing of local public transport (ÖPNV) was more important than a nationwide cheap ticket offer. He already sees approaches for the necessary basic financing of public transport, Hermann said. He did not go into detail and referred to the upcoming special conference of transport ministers, which is planned for September 19th.
