Baden-Württemberg: Ministry: "The peak of the summer wave has probably been passed"

Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) - The corona summer wave in Baden-Württemberg could have broken. A spokesman for the Ministry of Health said on Thursday in Stuttgart in view of the falling incidence: "The summer wave seems to have peaked at the end of July, and the steep increase in infections has slowed down. We are therefore cautiously optimistic." It is a concern that doctors and nurses are particularly badly affected by corona and other respiratory diseases and are often absent due to illness. It is therefore important to close existing vaccination gaps "so that we can cope well with the upcoming pandemic events in the coming flu and respiratory infection season in autumn and winter".

The number of Covid intensive care patients in Baden-Württemberg continues to rise, but it usually lags behind the incidence by a few days. As reported by the State Health Office (LGA), 159 people with a corona infection were recently treated in intensive care in the state's clinics - 33 more than in the previous week. The seven-day incidence, on the other hand, fell in a weekly comparison. The number of new infections in seven days and per 100,000 inhabitants was 680.9 on Thursday, almost 144 fewer than a week ago.

However, the incidence does not adequately reflect the course of infection. Experts have been assuming for some time that there has been a high number of unrecorded cases - mainly because not all infected people have a PCR test done. Only positive PCR tests count in the statistics.

The number of deaths linked to the virus rose to 16,587. That's 83 more than a week ago.
