Baden-Württemberg: More freshmen at universities in the southwest again

Stuttgart (dpa/lsw) - The number of first-semester students rose again in the 2022/23 winter semester for the first time in five years. 56,000 young people began studying at Baden-Württemberg's universities, as the State Statistical Office announced on Wednesday in Stuttgart. That is around three percent more than in the previous year. With the exception of the areas of human medicine, health sciences and sport, the increase was recorded in all areas.

After the outbreak of the corona pandemic, the number of foreign freshmen in particular fell sharply in the 2020/21 winter semester. In the following year, more foreign students started studying in Germany. On the other hand, the number of German first-year students fell sharply in the 2021/22 winter semester. In addition to the increase in the number of German freshmen, around nine percent more foreign students began studying in Baden-Württemberg in the current winter semester.
