Baden-Württemberg: More TBE cases from ticks than in the same period last year

Karlsruhe (dpa/lsw) - In the southwest, the number of cases of tick-borne encephalitis TBE is increasing. "Since the beginning of the year, a total of 75 TBE cases from 28 rural and urban districts in Baden-Württemberg have been reported to the state health department, which is 20 cases more than in the same period last year," said a spokesman for the Ministry of Health to the "Badische Latest News" (Saturday). According to the report, fluctuations are not unusual. The number of unreported cases is also likely to be well above the official figures, since mild courses are often not recognized.

With the exception of the city of Heilbronn, all of Baden-Württemberg is a risk area for tick-borne encephalitis (TBE). Tick expert Alexander Lindau from the University of Hohenheim told the Karlsruher Zeitung: "In the areas we examined in southern Germany, the activity is at a high to very high level." This is mainly due to the mild winter.

In severe cases, TBE can result in permanent damage such as paralysis. For the triple vaccination against TBE, there are good vaccination rates for children in many risk areas, but often not for adults - the infection is considered more dangerous for adults than for children. In severe cases, inflammation of the brain and meninges and damage to the spinal cord can occur, and in the worst case an infection can be fatal.

Another tick-borne disease is bacterial Lyme disease. There are no typical risk areas or vaccinations for this. The infection often begins with a red ring around the tick bite. Other symptoms can include muscle and joint pain and fever. If left untreated, late effects such as joint, heart muscle or nerve inflammation are possible.
