Baden-Württemberg: New attempt at OB election: Duel Bauer vs. Würzner

Who will soon be sitting in the executive chair in Heidelberg City Hall? The two opponents stand for change and consistency: Theresia Bauer (Greens) and Eckart Würzner (independent) want to achieve a majority of votes in the second ballot this Sunday.

Heidelberg (dpa / lsw) - This Sunday, the people of Heidelberg determine who will be at the head of the city in the future. In the second ballot for the post of mayor, the non-party incumbent Eckart Würzner and his green challenger Theresia Bauer fought a duel. A third candidate, Björn Leuzinger from "The Party", received only 1.79 percent of the votes in the first election on November 6, but is standing for re-election. The 61-year-old from Würzburg, who is aiming for a third term, had received 45.9 percent of the votes at the time. Ex-Science Minister Bauer got 28.6 percent. SPD candidate Sören Michelsburg, who came third with 13.5 percent, withdrew his candidacy and did not recommend a candidate. He assumes that his followers will switch half to Bauer and half to Würzner.

In the second attempt on this Sunday, the applicant with the most votes wins. 107,000 eligible voters in the university town are called to vote.

Bauer (57) presents himself as a "social-ecological alternative" to the incumbent, who is supported by the CDU and FDP. She says: "I stand for a change in political style, for a better climate of cooperation and for the consistent implementation of our ambitious climate goals." Bauer, who was named Minister of Science of the Year four times by the German University Association, relies on an alliance of "change voters" - she counts personalities from the SPD, FDP and the Colorful Left Party among them. Heidelberg on the move, among others, have made a recommendation for them as a group.

Würzner warns against believing that his re-election is already sealed. "Every vote counts," he told his followers. He received 84.44 percent of the votes in the mayoral election eight years ago.
