Baden-Württemberg: New car tunnel in Karlsruhe City is opened

He is the last piece of the puzzle of the combined solution: the car tunnel, which is to turn the busy Karlsruhe war road into a boulevard. Now it will be opened. Unless something comes up again.

Karlsruhe (dpa / lsw) - A new car tunnel through the city center will be opened this Wednesday (10 a.m.) in Karlsruhe with a considerable delay. The Karoline-Luise-Tunnel is the last building block of the combined solution local transport project. Some of the traffic on the busy Kriegsstraße will be relocated to the tunnel, while the tram will run above ground. The car lane, which previously divided the city in two, will become a boulevard.

The opening of the tunnel had been repeatedly postponed. When the time finally came at the end of May for the 1.6-kilometer-long tube to be opened to traffic, parts of the rotor of a fan flying around thwarted the already delayed start. The heart of the urban redevelopment is a subway under the pedestrian zone. It has been in operation since December.
