Baden-Württemberg: New Year's Eve riots: Strobl welcomes the first verdict

Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) - Because he rioted on New Year's Eve and attacked police officers, a 30-year-old man from Heilbronn must now go to prison - Interior Minister Thomas Strobl welcomed the quick verdict. "With us, the penalty follows immediately. We don't talk, we act. Baden-Württemberg is not Berlin," said the CDU politician on Sunday. "Things are different for us, on New Year's Eve and in dealing with it. For us, the rule is: New Year's fuss - construction in the new year."

Strobl had previously been criticized for speaking of a normal New Year's Eve in Baden-Württemberg on New Year's Day, although emergency services in the south-west were also attacked. "The New Year's situation in the country was essentially comparable to the turn of the year before Corona," he said on Sunday. "The situation was largely under control thanks to the great effort and coherent operational concepts, although every single case of violence against emergency services, whether against members of the police, rescue service or fire brigade, is absolutely unacceptable and must be condemned in the strongest possible terms."

A few days ago, the district court of Heilbronn had sentenced the 30-year-old man to nine months in prison without probation - in the so-called accelerated procedure. According to the court spokesman, the 30-year-old is said to have fired rockets at a group of children on the market square in Heilbronn on New Year's Eve. When the police wanted to check his personal details, he resisted and attacked the officers. He tried to kick and headbutt them, the spokesman said.

According to the district court, the man had six previous convictions and was under double probation. According to the spokesman, his previous convictions were mainly for theft, but also for resisting law enforcement officers.
