Baden-Württemberg: Piglet breeders in the southwest in crisis: Balance sheet from farmers

Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) - The state farmers' association is concerned about the future of pig farming in the southwest. About 100 piglet breeding farms are lost every year, there are currently 700 left, said a spokeswoman for the association. "In the country we have not been able to cover the piglet needs for fattening for a long time." The piglet price is currently around 62 euros, but 80 to 110 euros would be necessary for the farms. The increased electricity and gas prices have not yet been priced in here.

The degree of self-sufficiency in pork in Baden-Württemberg is 45 percent, nationwide it is 130 percent. There has been a structural break in recent years, and the number of farms with piglets has decreased by 9.6 percent in 2022 compared to the previous year.

State Farmer President Joachim Rukwied wants to take stock of the 2021/22 marketing year for farmers in the southwest on Monday (11:00 a.m.) and give assessments of the current marketing year. The financial year runs from the beginning of July to the end of June. The focus is on the income situation of the companies.
