Baden-Württemberg: Police dog stops fugitive cyclists

Karlsruhe (dpa / lsw) - A police dog stopped a fleeing cyclist in Karlsruhe. The dog inflicted various bite injuries on the 18-year-old, so the man was taken to a hospital, a police spokesman said on Friday.

A police patrol had previously become aware of the man because he was driving on a bike path while using his smartphone. When the police officers asked him to stop, he is said to have fled at high speed. The patrol of a police dog handler squadron noticed the incident on Thursday and wanted to stop the cyclist at a junction. According to the information, the officials initially only threatened the use of a police dog. When the man didn't react, the dog stopped the cyclist and bit his calf.

A search of the man did not reveal any evidence of criminal activity, it said. The 18-year-old is expected to be charged with using his cell phone while driving.
