Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) - After attacks on police officers and firefighters on New Year's Eve, police unionist Ralf Kusterer is pushing for a ban on rockets and firecrackers. "You can't avoid a ban on firecrackers," said the state chairman of the German police union in Baden-Württemberg on Monday. At the moment he sees no better remedy for the tense overall situation on New Year's Eve. However, centrally organized fireworks are fine.

According to police reports, both police and firefighters in Mannheim and Kehl were shot at and injured with fireworks on the night of the turn of the year. Kusterer emphasized that one should not go back to business as usual.
