Baden-Württemberg: Preparations for an international church meeting begin

Starting next week, thousands of church representatives from all over the world will meet in Karlsruhe. The preparations for this are really starting. But the citizens of Karlsruhe should also benefit from the event.

Karlsruhe (dpa/lsw) - The general assembly of the World Council of Churches (WCC) in Karlsruhe from August 31 is to deal with climate justice and the war in Ukraine. More than 4,000 participants from all over the world are expected by September 8th. Preparations are scheduled to begin on Thursday. Among other things, a so-called Magic Sky will be erected on the fairground. It is intended to create an open space for prayer and encounters. The flag of the WCC assembly will be hoisted on the castle tower.

From 2:15 p.m., representatives of the Evangelical Church in Baden, the WCC and the city want to provide information about the supporting program around the General Assembly. For example, workshops, lectures and discussion rounds are planned in the city, in which citizens can participate or listen. The encounter program for exchange with the international guests should be free of charge. Most of the events are planned to be in English. Where possible, a German translation should be offered.

The WCC sees itself as a fellowship of around 350 churches representing more than 580 million people worldwide. These include Orthodox, Anglican, Baptist, Lutheran, Methodist, and Reformed and Independent churches. The Catholic Church is not a WCC member, it attends the Assembly as a guest.

This is the highest decision-making body of the WCC and usually meets every eight years. According to the information, the General Assembly is “the most comprehensive gathering of Christians in the world”. The motto for the eleventh edition is: "The love of Christ moves, reconciles and unites the world." For the first time, the WCC assembly is visiting Germany.
