Baden-Württemberg: RAF negotiation room is demolished

Demolition instead of a memorial: The courtroom, which became known worldwide for the trials against the RAF terrorists, can now be demolished after all.

Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) - The former courtroom in Stuttgart-Stammheim, in which the RAF terrorists Ulrike Meinhof, Andreas Baader, Gudrun Ensslin and Jan-Carl Raspe stood before the court, can be demolished. The monument protection authorities have now approved an application, the Ministry of Finance announced on Friday in Stuttgart. The "Badische Latest News" reported first.

The country will build a new correctional hospital on the site of the multipurpose building. The previous prison hospital on the Hohenasperg is outdated. According to the ministry, a planning rate of 25 million euros has been earmarked for the new building of the clinic.

Because of its historical significance, the multi-purpose hall was classified as a cultural monument in 2013. However, the building stood empty and was no longer used. In addition, it was not open to the public. The multi-purpose hall, which was specially built for the RAF trials in 1975 for 12 million marks (6.1 million euros), has no windows and is armored and spanned by a steel mesh.

By 1997 there were a total of 49 RAF trials with 90 accused and 1,329 days of trial. In addition to organized crime cases, members of various other groups have also been tried in the past: the spectrum ranges from PKK officials and activists from Ansar al Islam to the leaders of various street gangs.
