Baden-Württemberg: Rare wild donkey offspring in the Wilhelma

Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) - In the Wilhelma Stuttgart there were offspring among the Somali wild asses. The species is one of the most endangered mammals in the world, the zoo said on Wednesday. The population is estimated at a maximum of 600 animals.

Starting this week, the almost three-week-old colt can also be seen regularly by Wilhelma visitors in the outdoor enclosure. The little stallion named Robert is already the 14th young animal in the Stuttgart Zoo. Wilhelma has been involved in the conservation breeding program for wild donkeys since 1980.

The wild donkeys from East Africa are hunted for their meat and have to compete with the livestock of the population for water and pasture. The species is on the verge of extinction. A third of the stock live in zoological institutions worldwide.
