Baden-Württemberg: residential container twice in flames: suspected arson

Göppingen (dpa / lsw) - Within a few days, residential containers in Göppingen caught fire twice. Police are investigating possible arson. A 53-year-old resident suffered serious injuries when leaving a container that was on fire on Wednesday, the police and public prosecutor in Ulm announced on Thursday. The man was taken to a hospital in a rescue helicopter.

A patrol noticed the fire in several containers on Wednesday. The containers were then evacuated. Other people were not injured. Three of the containers were no longer habitable due to the fire, and the city reportedly took care of accommodating the residents. According to the police, the residential containers are mainly inhabited by people with low incomes and the homeless.

One of the containers had already caught fire on Monday. Witnesses had previously observed a 26-year-old nearby. Shortly thereafter, garbage bags burst into flames near the container and set the facade on fire. After a search, the police met the 26-year-old suspected arsonist on Tuesday night. He was released on Tuesday. Investigators said the two fires were related. The police were initially unable to provide any information on a possible motive for the 26-year-old.
