FDP parliamentary group leader Hans-Ulrich Rülke viewed the "Free the nipples" motion by the young liberals at the FDP state party conference in Fellbach with skepticism - but also with a sense of humor. "There are certainly more important things," said Rülke on Thursday on the sidelines of the dpa party conference. However, he was glad that the applicants limited themselves to being voluntary and did not make freedom of movement in the outdoor pool compulsory, said Rülke with a wink. As long as it is voluntary and doesn't bother anyone, freedom of movement is fine with him. But: "I wouldn't recommend it to everyone."
The Young Liberals are calling for the abolition of different clothing requirements for men and women in swimming pools. FDP State Secretary General Judith Skudelny said that the topic of clothing in public bathing facilities has long been discussed on the basis of the cover - the application is the same from a different direction. Everyone should be able to visit bathing establishments, which requires a social compromise.
Alena Trauschel, at 23 the youngest member of parliament and one of two female members of the FDP parliamentary group, said she would have liked a different signal. There are more important issues - like the war in Ukraine and the energy crisis. But it is the prerogative of young people to make such requests. Trauschel is himself a member of the Young Liberals.
Loud protest came from the AfD parliamentary group on Thursday. Migration policy spokesman Ruben Rupp was outraged by the FDP's "nipple policy": "Germany is in one of its deepest crises since the founding of the Federal Republic and the FDP is working on how to make Germany even more gender-equitable, more permissive and more obscene."
It was still unclear early Thursday evening whether the motion entitled "Free the nipples" would be discussed at the party conference or whether there was no time at all for a debate.
