Baden-Württemberg: Shipwreck recovered in the port of Kehl

Kehl (dpa / lsw) - The sunken cargo ship "Taranis" in Kehl's Rhine port has been recovered. The approximately 100 meter long ship was first disassembled into four parts, as announced by the Badische Stahlwerke on Friday in Kehl (Ortenaukreis). The wreckage was then lifted with a crane and transported away. It is still unclear how the accident happened - an expert is examining the parts of the ship.

The ship buckled while being loaded in mid-January and then sank. The complicated salvage began on February 14. The ship was divided with the help of an anchor chain that was placed under the hull. The steelworks reported that the last part of the wreckage had already been removed on Thursday.

According to earlier information from the water police, a small amount of oil escaped when it was lowered to the bottom in January, which the fire brigade removed. According to the steelworks, no one was injured in the incident. There were also no substances that could endanger the environment.

According to the port administration, the port of Kehl covers an area of more than three square kilometers. With regard to goods handling, Kehl ranks seventh among the German inland ports.
