Baden-Württemberg: Significantly fewer deportations due to the corona pandemic

Stuttgart (dpa/lsw) - Because of the corona pandemic, significantly fewer people from Baden-Württemberg have been deported to their home countries or third countries in the past two years than before. Only about half as many people were sent back to their home countries or third countries as is actually the case. "The return options were significantly limited due to the global pandemic situation," said a spokeswoman for the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Justice. There are still many restrictions and flight cancellations, and some countries cannot be deported because of the Ukraine war. The SWR had first reported on the numbers.

According to the ministry, there were 1,328 deportations last year, and 1,362 had to be returned the year before. In 2019 there were a total of 2648, in 2018 even 3018 people. According to the ministry, around 35,000 foreigners are currently living in Baden-Württemberg because of the "traffic jam" and they are supposed to be deported. Most of them are from Gambia (5016), Nigeria (4333), Iraq (4240) and Afghanistan (3006).
