Baden-Württemberg: Steel company gives insight into wreck salvage

A cargo ship buckles - and sinks in Kehl's Rhine port. It will be weeks before the salvage can begin. The work is complicated - because the wreck can only be lifted in parts.

Kehl (dpa / lsw) - A large shipwreck in Kehl's Rhine port: The Badische Stahlwerke (BSW) want to give an insight into the complicated salvage of a ship on Thursday (10.30 a.m.). The work began on Tuesday, as the company in the district of Ortenau had announced.

The 100 meter long transport ship buckled during loading in mid-January and then sank. According to the steel mills, no one was hurt. There were also no substances that could endanger the environment.

According to the BSW, the damaged ship is first sawed into several parts. The wreckage is then lifted with a crane. The work should take around two weeks in total.

According to earlier information from the water police, a small amount of oil escaped when it was lowered to the bottom, which the fire brigade removed.

The steelworks are adjacent to the port of Kehl. According to earlier information from the port administration, this extends to over three square kilometers. With regard to goods handling, Kehl ranks seventh among the German inland ports.
