Baden-Württemberg: Strobl promises clarification of deadly police operations

Mannheim/Stuttgart (dpa/lsw) - A good four months after the death of a man as a result of a police operation in Mannheim, Interior Minister Thomas Strobl announced in the state parliament that the case would be thoroughly investigated. The mission will be thoroughly and holistically processed, said the CDU politician on Wednesday at a meeting of the interior committee on the subject. The right lessons will be drawn from this.

During a police operation in downtown Mannheim, a 47-year-old man collapsed on May 2nd. Two emergency services and a doctor from the Central Institute for Mental Health Mannheim had followed the man through the city center. According to prosecutors on Wednesday, officers beat the man, used pepper spray on him and handcuffed him. He died later in hospital.

According to an expert report, the man died of a "position and fixation-related respiratory disability," as the Mannheim public prosecutor announced. According to the State Criminal Police Office, at least one video was circulating on the Internet showing how one of the police officers hit the man lying on the ground in the head.
