Baden-Württemberg: Stuttgart 21 architect: "Have to think more radically"

Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) - Stuttgart 21 planner Christoph Ingenhoven thinks it is necessary to rethink large construction projects. "We have to think more radically and understand that investments such as a complete tunnel under the Stuttgart city center will only pay off in fifty years," the architect told the "Stuttgarter Nachrichten" (Saturday) 25 years after winning the design competition for the new Stuttgart main station. "I can say with conviction that I would not plan this project any differently today."

With the new underground station, the city is getting back space in a central location, Ingenhoven explained. "Districts that have been separate for over 100 years are now being connected." The construction of the new station will have a significant impact on the city: "The heart of the city of Stuttgart will be the future main station with its surrounding squares," he said. "The new train station will change the balance in the city, creating a new center that will permanently change the entire environment for the better."
