Baden-Württemberg: Stuttgart wants to be climate-neutral by 2035

Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) - The Baden-Württemberg state capital Stuttgart wants to be climate-neutral by 2035. The municipal council passed a climate pact on Wednesday. The basis of climate neutrality is the "Net Zero Stuttgart" study, which the state capital carried out together with the management consultancy McKinsey

According to the report, the report calls for 13 packages of measures in the areas of electricity, heat, mobility, waste management and agriculture. The electricity sector is the most important area with 47 percent of greenhouse gas emissions, followed by the heating sector with 37 percent and transport with 14 percent.

The measures with the greatest impact in the electricity sector include the expansion of photovoltaics on the roofs of Stuttgart and the investment by the municipal utility in other renewable energies. In the heating sector, building renovation and the expansion of renewable heating technologies, such as heat pumps, are mentioned. In the mobility sector, the focus is on strengthening cycling and local public transport as well as switching to low-emission drives.

The study also shows that Stuttgart has to prepare for significantly more extreme weather events. In 2050, winters with up to 50 percent more rain and significantly more heavy rain are expected, as well as more than twice as many hot days with temperatures above 30 degrees Celsius.
