Baden-Württemberg: Stuttgarter Kickers euphoric after the cup coup

With the 2-0 win in the DFB Cup against Bundesliga relegated Greuther Fürth, Oberliga club Stuttgarter Kickers caused a big surprise. For the second round, their captain is now hoping for a city derby against the big VfB.

Stuttgart (dpa/lsw) - When the coup in the DFB Cup was perfect, the spectators stood in the main grandstand of the Gazi Stadium and euphorically celebrated the Stuttgarter Kickers together with the fans in the standing areas. After the 2-0 (1-0) win against SpVgg Greuther Fürth, who had been relegated to the Bundesliga, the supporters of the Oberliga soccer team had fun singing: "Berlin, Berlin - we're going to Berlin".

There will probably not be a participation in the final, even if the Kickers threw the second division team playing three classes above them out of the cup thanks to a great performance. But a much more obvious wish from captain Kevin Dicklhuber in the draw for the second round of the cup on 18/19. October may become reality: a city derby of the fifth division against Bundesliga club VfB Stuttgart. "Then we'll knock them out," said the euphoric Dicklhuber on Saturday.

But first of all, the Kickers are hoping for a boost for the Oberliga season that starts next Saturday, in which they start as the top favorite for promotion. Last season they had missed him extremely narrowly. After being relegated to the third division in 2016 and falling from the regional to the Oberliga in 2018, the former Bundesliga club and DFB Cup finalist from 1987 has been stuck in amateur football for four years. Therefore, President Rainer Lorz was also pleased that the cup surprise against Greuther Fürth "is good for our reputation. That we are also perceived more strongly again."

In addition, the traditional club, which is always struggling financially, can look forward to another cup premium of 418,494 euros for the second round - after the 209,247 euros for the first round plus part of the audience revenue.

Against the sluggish and extremely weak Bundesliga relegated from Fürth, defender Denis Zagaria headed the aggressive but also playfully strong Kickers in front of 7280 spectators in the 9th minute before David Braig (89th) made everything clear after a counterattack - and certainly brought back memories of the great past of the Degerlochers in some older fans.

There was no sign of a difference of three leagues. On the contrary: "It was a deserved win, it wasn't lucky," said Lorz. Like the entire club, he is now hoping for promotion next spring - to at least play fourth-class again.
