Baden-Württemberg: The drilling platform should go back to Lake Constance after a boat accident

Überlingen (dpa / lsw) - After the sinking of a push boat on a drilling platform near Überlingen, the platform is to be used again on Lake Constance. From Tuesday onwards, the last two necessary test drillings should be carried out on the bottom of the lake for about ten days, said a spokeswoman for the Lake Constance Water Supply Association in Stuttgart on Friday. The boreholes serve the planned expansion of drinking water extraction from Lake Constance, which supplies around four million people in Baden-Württemberg.

After the sinking of the previous push boat for the platform, a boat from the company that salvaged the wreck at the end of last week will probably have to be used, the spokeswoman said. The schedule of the expansion project is not in danger because of the accident. The push boat capsized and sank on Lake Constance a good two weeks ago when the drilling platform turned in strong winds. The rescue from a depth of 71 meters took several days. The platform was moored in a port after the accident.

During the salvage work, a so-called oil boom caught leaking fuel at the lake surface to protect the environment from damage. According to the police, the drinking water supply was not affected by the fuel.
