Baden-Württemberg: The probationary period of the police inspector should be shortened

Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) - Just as the allegations of sexual harassment against him became loud, the Baden-Württemberg police inspector should be made a civil servant for life. "Since the police inspector had proven himself very well after his appointment, it was considered to shorten his probationary period," says a government report on the committee of inquiry, which was sent to the state parliament on Thursday and is also available to the German Press Agency.

Accordingly, in a letter dated November 23, 2021 from the responsible department of the Ministry of the Interior, an application was made to the State Ministry to appoint the inspector “as a civil servant for life”. Also on November 23, the public prosecutor's office in Stuttgart initiated investigations against the man. On November 12, he is said to have sexually molested a police officer.

The responsible department was not aware of the allegations at the time the letter was sent to the State Ministry because the events had overlapped, according to the government report. After the allegations became known, the appointment procedure was immediately suspended.

The country's highest-ranking police officer has been suspended for allegedly sexually harassing a colleague. Interior Minister Thomas Strobl (CDU) is also indirectly under pressure because of the matter - he passed on a letter from the inspector's lawyer to a journalist. The public prosecutor's office is therefore also investigating against him. The opposition demands Strobl's resignation. The investigative committee is to shed light on sexual harassment by the police as well as on promotion practices and Strobl's actions.
