"The background and motive for the crime have yet to be investigated," said a police spokesman on Monday. It is only certain that the attacked and seriously injured girl was a random victim. The caregiver, who wanted to defend the child and also suffered serious injuries, was not previously known to the 24-year-old man from Esslingen.
The German-born man with a Dutch passport seriously injured the girl and the 61-year-old woman at an elementary school on Friday and surrendered after a short escape. He is being investigated on suspicion of attempted homicide, as the public prosecutor's office in Stuttgart and the police in Reutlingen announced. A psychiatric report will also be prepared, said the police spokesman. There should not be a political background to the bloody deed.
