Baden-Württemberg: The renovation of Hohenzollern Castle has to be paused

Bisingen (dpa / lsw) - The renovation of Hohenzollern Castle has to be interrupted for several years. The reason is increased construction costs with lower income at the same time, as the castle manager Anja Hoppe said on Wednesday. Work on the bastion wall of the castle near Bisingen in the Zollernalb district will probably have to be interrupted from autumn 2023. Only in four to five years should it continue again, said Hoppe. Südwestrundfunk had previously reported.

On the one hand, the costs have increased significantly from the original five million euros. The castle wall is more damaged than expected. The castle administration is currently assuming 19 million euros in renovation costs. On the other hand, there is no income because the castle was closed for more than 15 months during the pandemic, as Hoppe said.

Now there is no money for further renovation. There is federal and state funding. But Hohenzollern Castle has to bear its own share of around 40 percent. It would help them if the deductible was waived, said the castle manager. Discussions about further financing are planned in the near future. At least the work will continue until then. The elevator to the courtyard is about to be completed. He should relieve the ailing driveway.
