Baden-Württemberg: The state sees a number of suitable areas for solar systems

There are hardly any solar systems on the roadside in the southwest. But maybe it's just a matter of time. Because the interest is great, according to the Ministry of Transport. And the first possible positions have already been identified.

Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) - Roadsides and free areas on federal and state roads in Baden-Württemberg are to be used for solar systems and power generation according to the will of the state government. "The interest in possible photovoltaic areas on federal and state roads is pleasingly high," said Transport Minister Winfried Hermann, who also wants to present the topic next Tuesday (January 31) in the government cabinet and afterwards (12:00 p.m.) publicly. A survey met with a great response, and areas were also identified where solar energy could be generated.

So-called inner ears, i.e. the open spaces between the rounded entrances and exits to the expressway, are particularly suitable as locations. A pioneer in the southwest is the "Lustnauer Ohr" on the B27 federal road, the largest PV system in Tübingen. Next to one of the busiest federal roads in Germany between the university town and Stuttgart, 2880 PV modules have been set up on two circular pieces of land. According to the municipal utility, the module area is almost 5,400 square meters. Noise barriers and road embankments are also suitable.

The state now wants to enable municipal utilities or energy cooperatives to use public spaces to generate electricity. "This is a contribution to climate protection and security of supply, and nature is protected," said Hermann (Greens).

According to previous information, there are around 4,840 kilometers of federal roads and around 9,650 kilometers of state roads in Baden-Württemberg. In order to be able to optimally exploit the potential for solar power generation, the orientation and location of the areas on federal and state roads is decisive. For example, embankments or noise protection structures in an east-west direction come into question.
