Baden-Württemberg: Traditional jousting on the Danube in Ulm

Wet fun on the Danube: from boats and equipped with lances, fishermen duel in Ulm in a traditional jousting. Thousands of spectators are expected to watch the spectacle.

Ulm (dpa / lsw) - Duel on the Danube: In the traditional jousting, opponents will compete against each other on the river in Ulm on Sunday (4 p.m.). Driven by boats, each with three drivers, the competitors try to throw their opponent into the water with a lance, as the city of Ulm announced.

The fishermen aim the approximately 2.8 meter long lance with a leather knob at their opponent's chest. If you fall into the water or step into the boat, you lose. If both stay dry, it goes into the next round. The tie-off ends as soon as one wins.

Thousands of people are expected to watch the spectacle on both banks of the Danube in Ulm and Neu-Ulm. The jousting is preceded by an opening dance and a parade through the old town. Then the actors solemnly march to the banks of the Danube.

The oldest records of Ulm jousting date back to the 16th century. Today's tradition of the Ulm fishermen's guild goes back to the carnival of the early modern period.
