Baden-Württemberg: union calls for stationary border controls to Switzerland

Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) - In view of the sharp increase in illegal entries from Switzerland, the German police union is calling for tougher political action against the neighboring country. "Smugglers have discovered Switzerland as a business model," union boss Ralf Kusterer told the German Press Agency in Stuttgart. Pressure must finally be put on Switzerland so that the government there can ensure security with border controls in its own country. If this doesn't happen, pressure has to be exerted and the movement of goods restricted, says Kusterer - meaning the numerous shopping tourists from Switzerland who saved a lot of money on shopping tours in Germany. "If Switzerland doesn't cooperate, we have to consider what other areas we can counter."

Kusterer also calls for stationary border controls by the federal police at the Swiss border. Federal police officers are currently unable to reject migrants who have been apprehended, he criticized. The Federal Ministry of the Interior still refuses to register border controls with Switzerland with the EU.
