Baden-Württemberg: University of Freiburg: climate activists clear the occupied lecture hall

Freiburg (dpa/lsw) - Climate activists in Freiburg cleared a university lecture hall they had occupied on Monday. A spokeswoman for the activist group said that the lecture hall was left voluntarily after the week-long campaign to enable a conversation with the rectorate. The management of the university had made the eviction a condition before entering into a dialogue.

According to the activist spokeswoman, between 60 and 100 people had stayed in the room in the days before and kept it occupied during the day. The students wanted to express their concern about the climate crisis and demand more commitment from the university. Among other things, they want to persuade the university to declare a “social-ecological emergency”. The university must also specifically commit to the problem of the climate crisis and anchor this more in research and teaching.

The results of the talks with the Rectorate immediately after the eviction have not yet been finalized. According to a university spokesman, Rector Kerstin Krieglstein also took part in the exchange. The university supports the substantive concerns of the group, said the spokesman. However, the occupation of lecture halls is a violation of the law and unacceptable.
