Baden-Württemberg: University receives center for research on livestock

Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) - The University of Hohenheim is getting a new research center for basic research on farm animals. The project, funded by the federal and state governments with 52 million euros, is based on a new approach, as a spokesman announced on Monday in Stuttgart. In the future, scientists will be able to explore the interplay between livestock and the millions of microorganisms in their digestive tract.

For this purpose, the research center will receive, among other things, so-called respiratory chambers. They can be used, for example, to analyze the composition of the air breathed by adult cows. The future research center with around 3500 square meters will be divided into two buildings. The examination devices are housed in a laboratory and institute building. The second area will house up to 250 cattle, sheep, pigs and poultry for animal experiments. The building is scheduled to be handed over in 2024. The federal government contributed 23.3 million euros to the total costs of 52 million euros.
