Baden-Württemberg: Whether Oberrealo or pacifist: Southwest Greens pay tribute to Ströbele

Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) - The green Oberrealo Winfried Kretschmann (74) and the party left Winfried Hermann (70) paid tribute to the late Green co-founder Hans-Christian Ströbele. The Baden-Württemberg Prime Minister Kretschmann, who was certainly not always in line with the left Ströbele, said on Wednesday: "He was a parliamentarian and a democrat with skin and hair - belligerent, non-conformist, authentic." Contradiction was never an end in itself for Ströbele. "He was permeated by the principle of questioning and critical discussion - and with his unmistakable style not only shaped the Greens, but the democratic discourse of our country."

The convinced pacifist Hermann explained: "I have lost a wonderful political friend with whom I worked closely for many years in the Bundestag." He recalled that Ströbele was "a staunch opponent of military operations, a peace activist and an admonisher for social justice". "He gave many marginalized people a voice and at the same time built a bridge to the younger generation, many of whom are very committed to climate protection and the preservation of our livelihoods."

Ströbele died last Monday at the age of 83. The former RAF lawyer was one of the founding members of the Greens and sat for the party in the Bundestag for 21 years.
