Baden-Württemberg: Young storks on the Affenberg practice flying south

The fact that summer is slowly coming to an end can also be seen from the fact that storks are making their journey south. On the Affenberg Salem, this creates an impressive spectacle in the sky.

Salem (dpa / lsw) - There is a big spectacle in the air: several hundred storks are currently practicing over the Affenberg Salem (Lake Constance district) for their flight to the south. The impressive spectacle takes place every year, because the young storks instinctively feel when it is time to prepare for the journey south, explained a spokeswoman for Affenberg. The boys learned the best flying technique in thermals and were the first to start their journey south, ahead of the adults.

"As is so often the case in life, the motto "practice makes perfect" also applies to young storks," said park manager Roland Hilgartner. Because the thermal flights over home terrain are absolutely necessary for the long journey to the winter quarters, so that flying really works perfectly.

According to the information, there are currently 50 breeding pairs on the Affenberg, which have given birth to and raised around 120 young. Neighborhood storks also take part in the flights over the zoo. According to the zoo, a first group of young storks has already started the journey south.
