Bavaria: 1500 pilgrims start the pilgrimage to Altötting

Regensburg/Altötting (dpa/lby) - After the corona pandemic, pilgrims from Regensburg made the pilgrimage to Altötting again this year. Around 1,500 believers set off in the morning, pilgrim leader Bernhard Meiler said on Thursday. The motto this time is "Under your protection and umbrella". Bishop Rudolf Voderholzer gave the participants words of blessing to take with them.

After their 111-kilometer march, the pilgrims want to arrive at the Chapel of Grace in Altötting at around 9:30 a.m. on Saturday. At 10.30 a pilgrim's service is planned in St. Anne's Basilica. Bishop Voderholzer wants to go through the last of the nine stages together with the faithful and pray.

Last year, due to the pandemic, there was an alternative pilgrimage, in which the bishop, together with Meiler, also made the last leg of the pilgrimage on foot to Altötting - many believers had written their concerns on notes that the bishop carried in a backpack.

In the years before the pandemic, several thousand believers took part in the Regensburg foot pilgrimage to pray in the world-famous Upper Bavarian pilgrimage site of Altötting.
