Bavaria: Aiwanger for excess profit tax: "If it hits the right people"

Aschaffenburg (dpa / lby) - Bavaria's Economics Minister Hubert Aiwanger considers an excess profit tax for crisis profiteers to be a way of keeping the costs resulting from the Ukraine war in check. "If it hits the right people in a targeted manner, then I'm basically not against it," said Aiwanger to the "Main-Echo" (Saturday). "But you have to exhaust all other measures first. Antitrust law should be tightened up, especially the oil companies have to be watched closely."

Aiwanger believes that the billions in government support for the Uniper group announced by Chancellor Olaf Scholz is correct. "If we don't do that, the public utilities may no longer get affordable gas." The most important thing now is that the storage tanks are filled. "Less gas has to be converted into electricity. Above all, large gas-fired power plants must be shut down as far as possible in return for compensation payments."
