Munich/Bamberg (dpa/lby) - Archbishop Ludwig Schick of Bamberg has lamented the increase in child labor in the world. "Children should explore the world, play, laugh, romp instead of carrying the heavy burden of life on their shoulders at a young age," said Schick, referring to the World Day against Child Labor on Sunday.
Children must be able to learn and develop, the Catholic bishop emphasized in a statement from the archdiocese on Friday. "Children's rights are non-negotiable."
According to the children's charity Unicef and the International Labor Organization (Ilo), child labor has been on the rise again since 2016. Reasons include the increasing armed conflicts and natural disasters. But the corona pandemic has also worsened the situation of minors.
