Bavaria: Baker boss fears bankruptcies due to high costs

Augsburg (dpa / lby) - Bavaria's baker boss Heinrich Traublinger does not rule out bankruptcies in the baking industry because of the high cost increases. "Of course we have to reckon with bankruptcies," said the state guild master of the "Augsburger Allgemeine" (Tuesday). "And some artisan bakers who actually didn't want to quit for three years may now do so earlier due to the enormous cost pressure."

The bakers not only complain about the high energy prices, but also about large increases in the price of raw materials. Wheat flour has become three times as expensive, said Traublinger. "We cannot pass our costs on to consumers one-to-one, otherwise even more customers will go to the discounters."

A significant proportion of customers have already migrated to the business of the corporations, he said. "We now need customers to close ranks with their bakers in order to get through the crisis. People have to remain loyal to their bakeries and be prepared to pay more for baked goods and cakes."
