Bavaria: Bamberg wants to renovate the famous bridge town hall: 18 million

Bamberg (dpa / lby) - They are among the most famous buildings in the Unesco World Heritage city of Bamberg: the bridge town hall and the upper bridge that leads there. Both will now be renovated in the coming years. "The historic town hall and the upper bridge are important landmarks of our city, which we can now repair with a small share of our own," said Mayor Andreas Starke (SPD) on Tuesday after a meeting of the city's finance senate.

According to the announcement, the renovation will cost almost 18 million euros. The municipality was therefore promised funding – around almost 8.8 million from the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and Media, 3.1 million euros from the government of Upper Franconia and 1.5 million euros from the Free State. Overall, the share of the renovation costs that the city of Bamberg has to shoulder is less than 13 percent, it said.

The town hall, built on an island in the Regnitz, dates back to the 14th century. During the renovation work, sandstones on the facade that had been damaged by moisture are to be restored. In addition, it is planned to restore the paintings on the east and west sides in their entirety and to "statically strengthen" the roofs, as the municipality announced. Inside, for example, a modern heating system and new technology for lighting and surveillance are to be installed.
