Bavaria: Bathing waters in Bavaria top: Only two outliers

Munich (dpa / lby) - The water quality of almost all bathing lakes in Bavaria is rated as good or even excellent by the EU. Last year, the inspectors only found poor water quality in two places at bathing lakes in the Aschaffenburg district: in the Mainparksee on the Mainaschaff beach and at the water rescue service in the Freigericht-Ost lake in Kahl am Main.

People kept feeding the ducks, geese and swans in these two places: "That's our big problem," said a hygiene inspector from the district health department on Friday of the dpa. Signs were put up at the two bathing areas last year that bathing is not recommended. But it is not forbidden, and most bathers are not bothered by it.

The water samples at the Baggersee Ebing in the district of Bamberg and at the Garchinger See near Munich were rated as sufficient. At all other bathing waters in the Free State, the water was good or excellent.

EU rules determine whether bathing water is classified as excellent, good, fair or poor depending on the amount of faecal bacteria. According to the EU Report 2021 published on Friday, the water in Europe is excellent at 85 percent of the 21,859 bathing areas, and only poor at 1.5 percent of the bathing areas. In Germany and Austria, more than 90 percent of the bathing areas were marked.
