Prien (dpa / lby) - In the Chiemsee region, bird flu has been detected in a seagull that has since died. The animal found in Prien am Chiemsee was infected with the H5N1 influenza virus, the Rosenheim district office announced on Wednesday. It was the first case in a wild bird in the region this year.
The veterinary office called on citizens to report dead waterfowl such as wild ducks, wild geese or swans. Under no circumstances should cadavers be touched without protective gloves, it said. In direct contact there is a risk of infection with the virus.
A number of bird flu cases have been reported in Bavaria in recent months. Two animals in the district of Miltenberg made the start at the end of October. A few weeks later, a case occurred in Landshut, Lower Bavaria. Avian influenza was also detected in a swan in Munich. One of the biggest outbreaks was in January in a livestock farm in the Schwandorf district - that's why all 70,000 ducks had to be killed. There were other cases in the districts of Rosenheim, Wunsiedel, Landshut, Bamberg, Starnberg and Deggendorf.
In the municipality of Train in the Kelheim district, after an outbreak of avian influenza, there is an obligation to set up stables in certain districts from Thursday. This means that the animals must be housed in closed stables or under special protection.
