Bavaria: Czech nuclear power plant Temelin plans siren test

Temelin/Prague (dpa/lby) - The Czech nuclear power plant Temelin is holding a siren test this Wednesday. From 12 noon onwards, a 140-second continuous tone sounds four times with interruptions, as the partially state-owned operator group CEZ announced on Tuesday. The nuclear power plant is around 60 kilometers from the borders of Bavaria and Upper Austria.

The wailing of sirens should also be heard in the wider area. Residents of the surrounding communities are notified via an SMS information system. The siren rehearsals therefore take place regularly in April and October.

Environmentalists consider the plant to be prone to failure because of the combination of pressurized water reactors of Soviet design of the WWER-1000 type with later upgraded US control technology. You have been expressing doubts about the reliability of this hybrid technology for years.

The nuclear power plant covers around a fifth of Czech power consumption and has been in operation for twenty years. Since the beginning of this year, 11.6 terawatt hours of electricity have already been produced in Temelin. One terawatt hour equals one billion kilowatt hours.
